Lifetime sobriety:
It takes years, even decades, to become an alcoholic. It just makes good sense that it’s going to take it while to achieve lasting sobriety. We already discussed the first important step, which is detox, but detox is only a small step as the physical addiction. With proper medical, supervision, and treatment it can be relatively easy to overcome the obstacle of addiction.
Once a person has detoxified with or without the proper therapy treatment, guidance, and supervision they will quickly go back to the behavior that caused them to become an alcoholic in the first place. The psychological problems need to be addressed. The brain has to be rewired so that it no longer demands the effects that alcohol creates. As well as the psychological problems that caused the addict to drink so much in the first place.
Rewiring The Brain:
The first step in rewiring the brain is simply long-term abstinence from alcohol. That step alone makes a huge difference of not only helping the addict deal with cravings but also allows the brain to at least partially recover from the physical damage caused by long-term alcohol abuse. Over a period of several months to a maybe even a couple of years the addict will have improvements in both short-term and long-term memory, visual and spatial functioning, increase attention span, and an increase in brain volume. Constant therapy will be required in order for the addict to achieve long-term sobriety and enjoy its physical benefits.
Therapy:
The most successful recovering alcoholics start in an in-house treatment program. There simply is no better method to treat alcoholism than an in-house treatment. By having the resources of an individual counselor or therapist combined with daily meetings and 24-hour supervision the recovering addict is given the best chance to begin a new life. Alcoholism is a disease and most insurance programs will cover at least some form of in-house treatment. If you have a friend or loved one in your life that is an alcoholic get them into an in-house treatment program. This is your best choice.
