xanax Xanax, also known generically as Alprazolam, is one of the top five prescription drugs of abuse on the market today. It is a tranquilizer which depresses the nervous system in a way similar to alcohol. Xanax is popular among young abusers who find it easy to obtain either from the corner dealer or at home in their medicine cabinet.

The effects of Xanax include:

  • difficulty concentrating
  • euphoria or a floating sensation
  • depressed breathing and heartbeat
  • tired feelings and excessive sleeping
  • memory loss

These effects can be enhanced when used with other illicit drugs of abuse. This is referred to as a synergistic effect when two or more drugs interact and their effects are strengthened. The results of these so-called synergistic effects are responsible for many overdoses and deaths.

Withdrawal Symptoms

Withdrawal symptoms from Xanax and other tranquilizers make detoxification especially severe. Symptoms include jittery, shaky feelings, rapid heartbeat, shaky hands, insomnia, sweating, and irritability.

Rehab or Treatment for Xanax Dependence

...which is why a residential setting is desirable

Approximately 30,000 people were admitted to Emergency Rooms in 2007 due to the effects of Xanax according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. This is a very dangerous drug that when combined with other drugs can have deadly consequences. The initial drug rehab or treatment phase must be met with tolerance and support. These particular clients, in their initial rehab phase, are particularly needy and prone to mood swings. Some behave as if they have a panic disorder. Usually, through various addiction treatment interventions, they settle down and are able to focus on the task at hand. Client issues must be met in a timely manner as they will begin to surface now that the client is drug-free. They must be allowed to work through their issues so as not to return to their previous state. They must learn healthy ways to cope with feelings instead of self-medicating with drugs as they have done in the past. These new ways of coping take time to develop which is why a residential setting is desirable. Clients need time to process feelings and learn to deal with them in a healthy, safe place.
